Ubuntu!

Ubuntu: Linux for human beings.

Lately I’ve been very frustrated with M$ wanting me to buy a legal copy of Windows XP. They refuse to let you use Firefox to download windows updates, and if/when you use IE to do it, they scan your computer to see if you have a valid product key. Who knows what else they are scanning for. I’m sure Bush gave them a little extra to help find “terr’ists”. He don’t need no warrent, God gave him the right to do whatever the hell he wants when He made him president.

To get away from old BillG and W, I’ve been thinking about going to linux. BUt my experiences in the past have been so/so. My main concern was a lack of drivers. Every time I’ve installed some flavor of linux, my network card has not worked, and I would have to go online to download drivers (if I could find them) But to get online, I had to have my network card working! So I would boot in Windows, find the drivers, then reboot in linux, try the drivers, find out they didn’t work right, re-reboot into windows, look up why the drivers didn’t work, re-re-reboot into linux, but by that time I would be tired of all the rebooting, and just stick with windows, which pretty much works out of the box.

So somewhere I heard about Ubuntu, Linux for human beings. It was supposed to be really easy to use, and “just work”. I decided to try a “live cd” first, to see if I really like it. There are 2 flavors of Ubuntu, regular Ubuntu, and Kubuntu. The only difference is the Kubuntu uses KDE for the desktop instead of Gnome. I had heard that Gnome was a little bloated and slow, so I tried the Kubuntu version first. (This was going to be for my laptop with limited resources)

I popped the cd in, went through the language choices, and waited (linux boots a little slower than windows. the thought is that you won’t have to boot often, since the system won’t crash) It goes through the “detecting hardware” phase, and says “detecting network hardware” Yeah right, like my el cheapo Fry’s wireless card is going to be detected. I had a hard enough time getting it to work in windows. The next screen says “searching for wireless networks” What?!? It actually found that card AND installed the right driver? At this point it wasn’t able to connect to my network, because I have WEP, and it didn’t ask my for the key, but at least it was trying.

Once everything is up and running, the desktop looks pretty nice, it’s stable, but still no network. I go through and try to put in the WEP key, but it’s still not connecting (I have the same problem with windows some times) Finally I decide to turn off WEP to see if that is the problem. Sure enough, it detects the network and connects automatically.

Now I decide to go through and change some settings to personalize my desktop. The dialog box is so big that the OK button is off screen. How the hell am I supposed to click OK? I search through a bunch of forums and find out that this is a common problem with KDE at 800×600 (which is the best my laptop will do) I like (K)Ubuntu enough to keep it, but I can’t deal with not being able to hit OK. So I decided to try regular flovored Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop. I like it. Gnome doesn’t seem any slower than KDE, and most importently, all of the dialog boxes are the right size.

So now my laptop dual boots XP and Ubuntu, although I don’t think I’ll be using XP very often. I’ve got Wine if I need to run any windows programs. Try Ubuntu, I think you’ll like it.

Stumble Upon

I search the web a LOT. And sometimes I run out of things to search for. I just sit there at Google, trying to think of something to search for.

I have now found a solution. I was looking for some firefox extensions for the new firefox 1.5rc3, when I stumbled upon a cool extension called, oddly enough, Stumble Upon! It gives you a newe toolbar with a Stumble! button, and when you click it, it brings you to a random page. But it’s not really just a random page, you get to chose categories that you are interested in, and it will bring you to pages that other people who are interested in the same topics feel are worth while.

When you find a page you like, you click the thumbs up button, and it will tell other people that you like that site, and send them to it when they stumble. There’s also a button to send the page to a friend, either through email, or if they use stumble upon aswell, through their stumble upon account.

I’ve found so many great pages that I would never have even thought to look for. I’ve become addicted to stumbling. Try it, I think you’ll like it.

Only 12 more months until Halloween

We’ve only got 12 months left until next Halloween. I’ve got to start working on our costumes =) I’ve started a poll to decide what next year’s theme will be.
Ezra really wants to be an ewok, and he wants me to be Darth Maul. Amber wants me to be Han, and she’ll be Leia. We figure both boys can be ewoks.
We also thought Shrek might be fun, and Ez liked the idea of being Puss in Boots before he heard about being an ewok.
I really want to finish my dragon costume. I think if I do a full body costume with extensions for my arms so I can walk on all fours, I can put a saddle on my back and let Ez or Oz ride me. The other boy can be the good knight who has to save princess Amber (who doesn’t like the idea, and insists the if we do this, she gets an expensive princess dress and one of those tall pointy princess hats)
Please vote, and feel free to leave comments or suggestions here or on the poll page.

Referrer Spam

For the past week I have been under attack from some Spam Bot that requests my blog index page, and gives the referrer as some porn site. that wouldn’t be so bad, but my bandwidth went from a few megs to over 225megs in a few days. It hit once a minute, each time from a different IP, with a slightly different url in the referrer. Sometimes it was mature-pictures.stupidsite.pl, sometimes it was forced-rape.stupidsite.pl. I don’t want to give the real url, because I’m sure that’s exactly what they would want. .pl is Poland for those who don’t know, although I’m sure the site was not really polish. At first I tried banning the ip addresses, but there were hundreds of them.

Finally I found Referrer Karma. It’s a cool program/script that checks the referring url, and if it doesn’t have a link to your site on it, the person/bot gets a 403 forbidden instead of your site. I installed it and checked my logs to see that all of the bots were getting 403s. After 2 days of getting nothing but 403s, the bots seem to have given up. There was not a single one in my logs. Now my logs are nice and clear to see all of the people who aren’t coming here.

Buy me a scary blackman

We walk into Webers last night and Ezzie starts yelling “Daddy, look a black man, a scary black man! Will you buy me a scary black man?” I’m like SHHHHHH! and look around to see which black person I should be appologising to, but there weren’t any around.

Scary Blackman

Then he shows me the halloween Pez dispenser section. There is what I can only guess is supposed to be a skeleton, but it really looks like someone in “blackface” I can’t believe noone has complained about this thing yet. I’m sure there will be some civil rights group up in arms about this.

EZ really really really wanted this thing, but AM thought it was way too racist and wouldn’t let him have it. He cried and stuck it in the cart anyway, and she put it back while he wasn’t looking. The whole way home he was looking through the shopping bags for this thing. When we got home and put everything away, he was quite disappointed that it wasn’t in there.

Today I had to stop at the store for eggs on the way home, and so I picked it up for him. I couldn’t resist. I couldn’t believe they would make such a thing, or that no one had even mentioned anything about it. But now I have, and if anyone ever reads this, I expect to hear a story about this on the news. Preferably CBS 5, since that’s what we watch.

It’s A Boy! (again)

We got a sonigram today, and it looks like EZ is going to have a little brother. I’m pretty excited, because it means all of EZ’s old outfits will fit him and be the right season. If it were a girl, AM would want to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe for her. And when we finally did have another boy, he might be born in the summer, and none of EZ’s cloths would be right for him. He would have to wear fleece onesies in July, and t-shirts in December.

So his name is going to be Sebastian Osiris Fox, to go with my sister Isis who was born on the 22. It turns out we were right on his due date, he will be born Jan 16. The doctor didn’t even say he was big for his age, so I wonder why AM is showing a month ahead. The sad thing about Jan 16 is that is LIZ’s b-day…. I don’t want a little liz running around my house. At least it’s boy. So I will have a little bitchy man. Yeah!! =(

Damn Evil Penguins

Did I tell you penguins were evil or what? Here is video proof that they are comunists. http://subpop.dev.slam.cc/downloads/free/So_Says_I_-_Hi_Res248.mov
EZ seems to like the music. The animation is not excellent, but it’s decent if a single person did it all.

Major Changes

I guess it turns out I didn’t need that extra drawing tablet after all. I had brought my original one to work, but my work no longer exists…

I got a call from my boss at 6:30 yesterday morning saying that we hadn’t paid our rent, and the new owners of the mall were going to try to lock us out. They told us when they took over that they were going to find any reason they could to kick us out. I guess we gave it to them. (The rent on the building is $13,000/month, and generally we don’t make that much…)

The boss said don’t worry, it would probably be all taken care of by the time I got in to open at 9:00. I tried to go back to sleep, but obviously couldn’t. I got up and took a shower, and when I was getting dresed I noticed that I had missed a call from the boss. So I call him back, expecting him to say that the people came and went, and eveything is all set.

Instead, he says that Dom has rented 3 Uhauls, and that we’re going to pack everything in the store up, even the projectors and sound racks. Those things are permenantly wired in there. So I drive AM and EZ out to the village, then drive all the way back to Rimrock, about 2 blocks from my house to pick up one of the Uhauls. I got the smallest one, and it still seemed huge trying to get on the freeway with our crappy little on ramp.

So dom went to winsong to get some mexicans to help, and I was in charge of the projection room. The boss said to just cut all the wired, and we’ll just have to splice them if we move back in. I cut probably 1500 wires, there is no way I’m rewiring that thing if we somehow get our jobs back.

Getting the projectors down the stairs was insane. When they put them in to begin with, they cut a hole in the wall, and just used a fork lift. We had a little dolly and 3 mexicans to try to manuver this 6″ tall, 2000 pound projector down a VERY steep set of stairs. We ended up laying it down and sliding it, but I had to pull with all my might to keep it from sliding too fast and squashing the mexicans. I am soooooo sore. We did 2 projectors, 2 sound racks that were even heavier than the projectors, 2 platters, 2 makeup tables, and various other tables. I can’t believe we got it all out in one day.

The boss said he will give me a job working for the tour companies, but I’m not sure that’s what I want to do. If anyone out there has a computer job open, let me know. Maybe I better get working on my hosting company Sly Fox Hosting

Another Garage Sale Find

While not nearly as good a find as my $5 Lego Robotics or my $5 Tivo, I found a drawing tablet this weekend for $25. I already have a wacom tablet, but I brought it to work, and I need one at home now. This one is an Aiptek HyperPen 6000. It’s slightly bigger than the wacom, although the drawing surface is nearly the same size. The one thing that’s not as cool as the wacom is that the pen requires a battery. A AAAA battery. I’ve never even heard of AAAA. It looks like a AAA, only about 3/4 as thick and 3/4 the length. The cool thing about this tablet is that it doesn’t need an a/c adapter, it has a plug that goes in your ps/2 port and draws the power from there.
I’ve already put the tablet to good use, drawing the logo for my new web hosting company http://www.SlyFoxHosting.com.

EZ also found a couple of deals this weekend. He got a talking, vibrating light saber for $0.25, and a Blues Clues plate for $0.50.

Site ideas

Ok, I’m looking for some site ideas. I put a couple of new banners up, added some GIMPed pics, and now I don’t know what to do. I was thinking about puting up a “how to” sections with instructions on things like upgrading a TIVO and setting up serial PPP, case mods, halloween costumes, etc. But after I do those 3/4 things, then what?

I need to get some content so people will come to the site, but I need someone to come to the site so I can get some ideas of what to put on here.

Maybe nude pictures of Bea Arthur…..
